The Israelites camped at Mount Sinai for a year, constructing the Tabernacle and learning God’s commandments given through Moses. They then travelled to Kadesh-barnea, at which point God ordered Moses to send out spies to survey Canaan. The spies reported the land was bountiful but inhabited by formidable opponents. Fearful, the Israelites refused to conquer the land but were equally unwilling to remain in the wilderness. Their attempt to enter Canaan without leadership resulted in defeat. The Children of Israel lived in Egypt for nearly 400 years, flourishing in the fertile land of Goshen. Despite facing oppression and severe regulations from successive pharaohs, their numbers grew.
