The North wind and the Sun *

The tale of “The North Wind and the Sun” imparts a valuable lesson on the power of gentleness and kind persuasion, which often triumph over force and bluster.

In this fable, the North Wind and the Sun are engaged in a spirited argument over their strength. Each claimed to be the mightier force of nature, eager to prove their dominance. As they bickered back and forth, a Traveler happened to pass by, cloaked in a warm and cozy garment.

In an attempt to settle their dispute, the Sun proposed a challenge. The stronger of the two would be the one who could strip the Traveler of his cloak. The North Wind, simmering with determination, seized the opportunity and unleashed a fierce gust of cold wind upon the unsuspecting Traveler.

As the powerful gust struck, the ends of the cloak fluttered and flapped in the air, but the Traveler clung tightly to his garment, steadfastly resisting the wind’s relentless assault. The North Wind, frustrated by the resilience of the Traveler, redoubled his efforts, tugging and pulling at the cloak with all his might. However, despite his aggressive attempts, the cloak remained firmly in place, shielding the Traveler from the chilling gusts.

Then, it was the Sun’s turn to demonstrate its strength. Rather than resorting to force, the Sun chose a different approach. Its warm rays gently caressed the Traveler, providing comfort and relief from the bitter cold. As time passed, the Sun’s rays grew increasingly intense, and the Traveler began to feel the warmth penetrate his body. Gradually, the Traveler loosened his grip on his cloak, feeling at ease in the pleasant climate created by the Sun’s benevolent rays.

Basking in the gentle warmth, the Traveler eventually decided to remove his cap and wipe the perspiration from his brow. The Sun’s rays, now radiant and inviting, continued to envelop the Traveler, luring him with the promise of warmth and comfort. Ultimately, swayed by the Sun’s persuasive power, the Traveler unfastened his cloak and let it drape loosely over his shoulders.

With each passing moment, the Sun’s radiance intensified, until the heat became almost unbearable. In a bid to escape the scorching sunshine, the Traveler sought refuge in the welcoming shade of a nearby tree. As he rested in the cool shade, the Traveler basked in the realization that the Sun’s gentle and persuasive approach had won the day.

This timeless fable reminds us that brute force and intimidation may yield temporary results, but it is the power of gentleness, kindness, and persuasion that can truly inspire change and win over hearts and minds. So, let us remember the lesson of the North Wind and the Sun, and strive to embrace empathy, compassion, and understanding, as they are the catalysts for profound transformation and harmonious coexistence.

  1. Awesome last line!

Living, as I presently do, out of doors ~ and in a body, at that, which does not adjust to temperature changes as a normal one would, not only do I spend a lot of my time and physical energy taking off and putting on layers, but also must fold them neatly in my minivan (in a sitting position) and move everything necessary to stash them neatly out of the way, so there will be room to do anything else… So I was just meditating on this very fable, not two days ago, hahaha!
