According to Buddhist belief, the origin of the universe is quite distinct from the creation stories found in other religious traditions. Let me explain:
No Creator God:
Unlike many other religions, Buddhism does not posit a creator god responsible for bringing the universe into existence. Instead, it teaches that everything is interconnected and interdependent. Present events are caused by past events, and these events become the cause of future events.
Endless and Impermanent Existence:
The three signs of existence in Buddhism are endlessness, impermanence, and uncertainty. Existence is endless because individuals are reincarnated over and over again, experiencing suffering throughout many lives. It is impermanent because no state, whether good or bad, lasts forever. Our mistaken belief that things can endure leads to suffering. Lastly, existence is uncertain because when we examine our experience, no knower can be precisely defined, and no enduring essence of experience can be located.
The Six Realms:
Buddhism describes six realms into which a soul can be reborn. These realms represent different states of existence:
Heaven (Devas): A realm of enjoyment inhabited by blissful, long-lived beings.
Human Realm: Considered the most fortunate state because humans have the greatest chance of enlightenment.
Titans (Asuras): Warlike beings at the mercy of angry impulses.
Hungry Ghosts (Pretas): Unhappy beings bound to the fringes of human existence, unable to satisfy their cravings.
Animal Realm: Undesirable due to exploitation by humans and lack of self-awareness.
Hell Realms: Inhabitants here experience creative and temporary torture until their bad karma is worked off.
- Interlinked Realms:
These realms are not entirely separate; they are interconnected. Humans and animals share the same world, but being born as a human or an animal has different implications. A human can experience touches of heaven when happy or lower states when hateful, greedy, ignorant, or in pain. Meditation practitioners can ascend progressively higher heaven realms.
In summary, Buddhism emphasizes causality, interconnectedness, and the impermanence of existence rather than a singular creation event. The universe continually evolves, and beings seek liberation (nirvana) to break free from the cycle of life, death, and rebirth¹. 🌟

What is the state of “nirvana?”
Does a person exist, or is it non-existence?
In Buddhism, nirvana is the highest state a soul can achieve. We are energy. Energy can’t be destroyed therefore inexistence is impossible. The way I understand it is, once you reach the state of nirvana, you will not reincarnate any longer. So your soul isn’t lost, destroyed, or ceases to exist
