Here’s my rendition of the Parable of the Talents:
Once upon a time, in a distant land, there lived a wealthy man who was about to embark on a long journey. Before leaving, he summoned his three trusted servants and entrusted them with his property. To each servant, he gave a certain number of talents, a valuable monetary unit.
- The First Servant: To him, the master bestowed five talents. Eager and industrious, this servant wasted no time. He invested the talents wisely, trading and multiplying them. When the master returned, the servant proudly presented not just the original five talents but an additional five he had gained.
- The Second Servant: The second servant received two talents. Like the first, he diligently put the talents to work. Through shrewd business decisions, he doubled his portion, presenting four talents to the master upon his return.
- The Third Servant: Alas, the third servant received only one talent. Unlike his counterparts, he lacked confidence. Fearing failure, he buried the talent in the ground, preserving it but not growing it. When the master returned, he returned the same solitary talent, untouched.
The master, assessing their efforts, praised the first two servants. “Well done, good and faithful servants,” he said. “You have been faithful over a little; I will set you over much. Enter into the joy of your master.”
However, the third servant faced a different fate. He trembled as the master spoke sternly: “You wicked and slothful servant! You knew I reap where I have not sown and gather where I scattered no seed. Why didn’t you invest my money? Take the talent from him and give it to the one who has ten talents.”
And so, the third servant lost even the one talent he had. Cast into the outer darkness, he wept and gnashed his teeth.
The moral of this tale is clear: We are entrusted with various gifts, abilities, and resources. Whether great or small, we must use them wisely, multiply them, and not fear taking risks. For in doing so, we honor the trust placed upon us and find joy in our master’s approval.
