The Knight’s Tale (The Canterbury Tales)

Palamon and Arcite are both cousins and knights. They were captured and imprisoned by the duke after being found unconscious by Theseus, the duke of Athens, after his battle against Creon of Thebes. They were shut up in a cell in the tower of Theseus’ castle of which a small window overlooking the palace garden is the only contact for them to the outer world. Through this window Palamon encounters Theseus’ sister-in-law Emelye for the first time.

It happened on an early morning in the month of May, Palamon awakens and catches sight of the beautiful Emiliye picking flowers in the courtyard with her delicate hands. Enchanted by her beauty palamon falls deeply in love with her. He wonders whether she is a human being or a goddess, so captivating is her beauty. The excitement of Palamon wakes Arcite who was sleeping in the same cell and he also catches a glimpse of Emelye and he also falls in love with the enchanting beauty below in the garden.

The new and sudden romance of Palamon and Arcite becomes a source of tension and strain on their once strong friendship. As the days went on, this competition for the love of Emelye drive a wedge between their friendship and their fondness deteriorates.

After years of imprisonment Arcite is eventually released from prison. With the help and advice of a mutual friend of Theseus and Arcite his sentence is amended from imprisonment to exile. But the freedom and exile bring sorrow to the heart of Arcite. For him being away from his beloved Emelye in exile is more painful than his previous imprisonment. Driven by his deep love for her Arcite returns to Athens in disguise and joins into Emelye’s service in the hope of being nearer to her.

Meanwhile Palamon escapes from his imprisonment by poisoning the jailer and hides himself in a grove. Here hiding behind the bushes he overhears Arcite declaring his love for Emelye. This fuels his determination to win Emely’s love.

As they meet once again, Palamon and Arcite find themselves tangled in a twisted love triangle. Driven by their emotions they engage themselves in a duell to decide who is worthy of Emelye. But before the duel escalates the hunting party of Theseus arrives at the spot and stops the fight. Realising the importance of the situation Theseus spares their lives and proposes s different opportunity to settle the dispute.

Palamon and Arcite are given the opportunity to take part in a grand tournament organised by Theseus. The winner of the tournament will get the right to marry Emelye and the rivalry between the can be set aside.

Palamon and Arcite were allowed to organise their teams comprising 100 men (soldiers) each. After an year the proposed day of the tournament battle has arrived. Theseus arranges a sumptuous banquet for both the parties in preparation of the great and decisive event. Both the parties are stressed over the outcome of the tournament.

Palamon prays to the goddess of love, Diana, pleading for Emelye’s hand in marriage. Emelye turns to Diana, the goddess of hunting and the protector of maidens with her prayers. She prays to Diana to allow her to marry the one who truly loves her, or else she is ready to remain unmarried. In the meantime Arcite seeks assistance from the god of war, Mars in his quest for victory in both battle and love.

Theseus explains the rules of the tournament or battle. According to the rule if anyone of the combatants becomes injured he will be immediately withdrawn from the battle to prevent any fatal causalities.

Both Palamon and Arcite fight with unrelenting courage and skill as the battle progresses. However destiny intervenes when Palamon is taken down from the horse after receiving a serious wound from the sword of one of Arcite’s soldiers. At this juncture Theseus declares the war ended, ultimately ending the conflict.

Although Arcite won the battle, heavenly gods interfere with the result. Saturn, the god of time comes to the help of Venus. In an unexpected turn of events Arcite is killed by a strange accident as he is about to take Emelye’s hand as his reward. His own horse knocks Arcite down and kills him.

On his deathbed, awaiting his death Arcite displays a noble and selfless gesture. Recognising Palmon’s deep love for Emelye, Arcite encourages her to marry his opponent and former friend Palamon. He assures her that Palamon would be a worthy and dedicated husband for her. Emelye, touched by his selflessness mourns over the death of Arcite and is ready to fulfill his last wish.

Theseus, deeply affected by the turn of events decides that Palamon will marry Emelye fulfilling all their prayers. Despite all the hardships and obstacles the endured love triumphs uniting Palamon and Emelye in a marriage that will be blessed by the gods soon.

Thesus organises a grand funeral to honour Arcite’s valour. After a period of mourning, to forget the incidents and sorrow Theseus declares a day for the marriage of Palamon and Emelye. So ends the turbulent story to an end bringing the couples the happiness they had sought for so long.

The story of Palamon, Arcite and Emelye demonstrate the power of love and the complexity of human emotions as they traverse the difficulties of rivalry, friendship, and sacrifice. It reminds us that even in the face of hardship love has the power to move beyond borders and even change the course ofdestiny.
