Miraculously, Hatherley narrowly escapes being crushed to death, thanks in part to the aid of a courageous lady residing in the estate. Desperate to evade his bloodthirsty pursuer, Hatherley leaps from a second-story window, severing his thumb in the process.
Following the fall, Hatherley loses consciousness but awakens hours later, disoriented yet alive. His harrowing experience and subsequent account are instrumental in helping Sherlock Holmes unravel the mystery surrounding the disappearance of another hydraulic engineer. Together with Dr. Watson and the police, Holmes arrives at the scene only to find that the building is engulfed in flames, and the criminals have made their escape.
Holmes, relying on Hatherley’s narrative, uncovers a web of deceit and identifies Stark and his associates as counterfeiters. The hydraulic press, once used to press metal for counterfeit half crowns, ultimately meets its fiery demise when Hatherley’s light is crushed inside, accidentally igniting the machine. Despite Holmes’ efforts to reveal the truth, the criminals manage to elude justice, escaping with several boxes believed to contain counterfeit money.
In this particular investigation, while Holmes succeeds in unraveling the secret behind the hydraulic press and shedding light on the criminals’ activities, he is unable to apprehend them, leaving a lingering sense of injustice.
